News for the last week of September

Katie helps show Kyle how to point to the words as they say their "Two Red Apples" poem.  We call this "tracking".

Jackson and Hunter are doing a great job spelling word with our foam letters.  It is amazing how many words we can sound out already.  Good job, boys!

Jayden and Kyndra are using our "whisper phones" to practice the sounds in their sound books.  When we talk into these phones, we can use a whisper voice and we hear it in our own ear.  They are pretty cool.
To finish up our apple theme, we made apple crisp this morning.  Everyone helped mix and measure.  As you can see from the "thumbs up", it was really good!   Mrs. Ashbacher forgot that our fruit and veggie snacks also started today, so we had a little apple crisp, fresh berries and milk.  I wonder if anyone was hungry for lunch?

Wow,  Monday is October 1st already!  Have a great weekend!

Apples, Apples, and more Apples!

It was apple day in kindergarten today!

We tasted different colors of apples to decide which was our favorite, then we made a graph of the results.  Have your child tell you about the graph they are bringing home in their folder.

Mrs. Klema helped us sponge paint apple trees.  Aren't they awesome?

We also made an apple tree number game that will be coming home next week.  I hope you and your child have fun playing it together.
It's a little hard to see, but Jayden was very creative making a "friend" out of our straws and connectors.

I hope you all have a great weekend.
Please take time to review your child's work with them, including their sound book.
Don't forget to check the BAK blog often for information and announcements concerning our students and school.

Pattern Practice

Math is full of patterns!  Yesterday we made sound patterns and  colored apples in patterns. Today we worked in small groups and made patterns with cubes.  I have introduced the concept of labeling patterns such as: AB,  AAB, and AABB.  Encorage your child to look for patterns around the house and neighborhood.

Exploring the Concept of Volume

Today, we used beans, macaroni and several different sized containers to explore the concept of volume. We talked about why some containers hold more than others and how we could find out which ones held the most.  Our new Everyday Math program has some great hands on activities for learning math concepts!

Alphabet Sort

Today we did a alphabet sort.  We started by talking about how ABC books always begin with A and end with Z.  Then we read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. (there are some fun clips of this book on youtube).
After the story we used a variety of alphabet letters and sorted them out on the floor.  Everyone did a great job working together and following directions.

Jolly Phonics from Mrs. Wahls

Thanks to Mrs. Wahls for making these Jolly Phonics activities and games you can print and play at home!

Jolly Phonics activities

Terrific Tuesday

Today we talked about the number 0.  We all kept out five of our fruit snacks and counted backwards to zero as we ate them.

You may hear your child talking about what they did during "group time" this year.  We have 2 blocks of time each day that we work in small groups.  Mrs. Klema comes in to help us out.  We always have one group working at the computers, a group with Mrs. Klema and a group with myself.  This time is spent working on reading and math skills.  Working in small groups helps students focus on the task at hand.
Alexis and Nickolas worked together to sort out a tub full of animals during "choice time"!!  Great job, you two!

Garrett and Jack used their "choice time" to build with the blocks.  Good teamwork!

Friday Fun

We made it through our first week!  I'm guessing you've had some very tired kiddos!  I know I've been to bed early this week.  Hopefully everyone will get rested up over the weekend.
We had a lot of fun today with a story about having "jitters" on the first day of school.  There was a surprise ending to the story.  Ask your child who didn't want to go to school in our story.  After the story, we made "jitter juice" to help get rid of any jitters we still had about school.  We got to ask our friends if they liked the juice or not.  It's fun to watch this group interact with each other.  They are a very social group!
Resting towels went home today to be washed up and sent back on Monday.

Jolly Phonics

As most of you know, we use Jolly Phonics for our early reading skills.  This program has produced great results since we began using it a few years ago.  Support from home is vital to your child's success in school.  Please take time to go through your child's "sound book" each evening.  After we get several sound introduced, we will be sending home word lists to practice blending sounds into words.  Again, we need your help from home with these lists.

The pictures and video (if I got it posted) are of the students using the Jolly Phonics Smartboard lesson.  If you ever have any questions about the program, be sure to let me know.  Thanks for all your help and support with your child's learning!

First Day Fun

Here are a few pictures of our first day!  I have 16 great kindergarteners in my class.  Be sure to ask your child about Chester the Raccoon and his "kissing hand".

School Tomorrow!

Just like the kids, I am excited about another year, but sad to see summer come to an end.  We will spend much of this first week learning new routines and meeting new teachers and friends.  If you have any questions about what is happening at BAK, be sure to call or e-mail me.  I am looking forward to working with you throughout the year to make kindergarten a great experience for your child.
